John Bell & Croyden: A world first for retail pharmacy

John Bell & Croyden, London's landmark healthcare store and part of Lloydspharmacy, is the first retail pharmacy in the UK to achieve registration to the international environmental management system standard, ISO 14001 with the BSI Group. Commenting on the success Rita Wright, Personnel and Development Manager at John Bell & Croyden, said, "We're absolutely delighted with this achievement. We believe it to be a first for retail pharmacy in the UK, and possibly the world, which is something quite special".

The success of achieving registration means the company now has in place the structure to support their efforts to manage the environmental impacts of their business activities, and in doing so improve environmental performance in key areas such as waste management and storage and use of hazardous substances.

Mike Ward, Managing Director of Lloydspharmacy, said: "John Bell & Croyden has a global customer base, therefore it was important that we implemented a standard that is recognised the world over. Increasingly we're finding our customers are asking what we're doing "about the environment". Achieving ISO 14001 registration is a clear demonstration that we're committed to managing our environmental impacts and contributing to sustainable development as an integral part of our general management processes."

Implementation of ISO 14001 was co-ordinated by Bruce Dixon, Environmental Advisor at Lloydspharmacy, who added, "We aim to improve the well-being of our customers through the provision of professional healthcare advice, products and services. This is perfectly complemented by taking responsibility for the impact of our business activities and 'doing our bit' to help protect and improve the environment we share with those customers."

The certificate was presented to Mike Ward by Christina Palmer, BSI Marketing Manager, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). At the award ceremony, Ms Palmer commented: "I am delighted to be presenting this certificate to John Bell & Croyden who has certainly set the standard in pharmacy and I look forward to working with the team in the future as they build on this success."
